McDaniel College officially welcomed the Class of 2029 during an Introduction Convocation on September 8, 2023. The event took place at Baker Memorial Chapel and included a ceremonial ringing of the Old Main bell, a tradition that marks the beginning of the students’ academic journeys.

The ringing of the bell, located in Memorial Plaza, serves as a symbolic gesture, with new students “ringing in” to the college community while graduating seniors will “ring out” during Commencement Day. This year’s ceremony attracted students and faculty alike, creating an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation.

Commencement of New Academic Year

The convocation featured speeches from key figures at McDaniel College, including President Dr. Julia Jasken, who expressed her enthusiasm for the incoming students. “We are thrilled to welcome each of you to our community,” she stated.

The event also included remarks from Richard Smith, Ph.D., the college chaplain, who encouraged students to “not just be here but to be present.” His words resonated with the attendees, reminding them of the importance of engagement and connection during their time at college.

Student Government Association President Jay Artis also addressed the audience, urging students to get involved in campus activities and to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them.

Community and Tradition

The ceremony highlighted the sense of community that McDaniel College fosters among its students. Phillip A. Sullivan, Ph.D., the Dean of Students, welcomed the Class of 2029, emphasizing the support systems in place for new students as they embark on their academic endeavors.

As students lined up to ring the Old Main bell, the excitement was palpable. Each student, including Aryeh Murphy from Columbia, Maryland, and Kimberly Flores from Baltimore, participated in this rite of passage. They received assistance from faculty members, including Dean Sullivan and Chaplain Smith, who were on hand to celebrate this milestone with the students.

The event concluded with the singing of the school’s Alma Mater, further instilling a sense of belonging among the new cohort. The ringing of the bell and the convocation itself encapsulate not just a tradition, but also the commitment of McDaniel College to nurture and support its students throughout their academic journeys.

This year, the Class of 2029 steps into a vibrant community rich with opportunities for personal and academic growth, setting the stage for memorable experiences over the next four years.
