Massachusetts is set to enhance its research and innovation landscape as Governor Maura Healey announced the formation of the DRIVE Acceleration Team. This initiative is part of the broader DRIVE (Discovery, Research, Innovation for a Vibrant Economy) strategy aimed at strengthening the state’s already robust innovation sector, which plays a significant role in supporting jobs across various industries.
New Strategies for Economic Growth
The creation of the DRIVE Acceleration Team reflects Healey’s commitment to positioning Massachusetts as a global leader in innovation. The team will investigate various strategies to enhance the state’s research ecosystem and foster strong public-private partnerships. The governor highlighted the importance of Massachusetts researchers, stating, “People around the world rely on the cures and scientific advancements that come from Massachusetts researchers.”
Leading the Acceleration Team is Quentin Palfrey, who serves as the Director of Federal Funds and Infrastructure. The team features prominent members from the state’s scientific research community, higher education institutions, and business organizations. Palfrey emphasized the urgency of expanding the sector, stating, “Now is the time to think big about how to grow this sector, create more jobs, and strengthen our leadership globally.”
Investment to Foster Innovation
Alongside the launch of the DRIVE team, Governor Healey has proposed legislation that includes a substantial investment of $400 million in state funds. This funding is intended to attract additional private and institutional investments, thereby energizing the innovation sector and retaining top talent. Matthew J. Gorzkowicz, the Administration and Finance Secretary, underscored the importance of diverse expert opinions for the future of the state’s innovation landscape.
The DRIVE Acceleration Team comprises a wide range of experts, featuring distinguished figures from institutions such as Harvard University, MIT, Northeastern University, and Boston University. Additionally, representatives from the healthcare sector, labor unions, and philanthropic organizations are included, all united with a common goal: to enhance Massachusetts’ reputation in the fields of research and discovery while boosting the economy that relies on it.
