URGENT UPDATE: A sergeant with the Massachusetts Department of Correction tragically died in a motorcycle crash on Route 117 in Lancaster on August 7, 2023. Aaron Gill, 50, succumbed to severe injuries after failing to navigate a curve while riding westbound, according to local authorities.

Emergency responders, including Lancaster police and firefighters, arrived shortly after the accident but were unable to perform life-saving measures. Gill’s untimely death has sent shockwaves through the community, as he was known for his service and dedication both professionally and personally.

Born on August 21, 1974, in Burlington, Vermont, Gill was set to turn 51 just weeks after the crash. He dedicated 27 years to the corrections department, where he was remembered for his unwavering support and advocacy for his colleagues. A friend and coworker, Stephen Hocking, expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “Aaron never backed down from the call at work and always advocated for what was right.”

Gill was not only a dedicated public servant but also a passionate musician. He performed for over a decade with the Irish American Police Officers Association Pipes & Drums and was a founding member of the Massachusetts Correction Officers Federated Union’s Pipe and Drum band. His obituary highlights his pride and humility in honoring fallen officers and participating in government ceremonies.

In addition to his professional achievements, Gill was an enthusiastic genealogist and a lover of New England history. He enjoyed exploring cemeteries and historic sites, seeking connections to the past. An avid motorcyclist, he was also a founding member and past president of the Hired Guns Motorcycle Club of Massachusetts, where he fostered camaraderie and loyalty among its members.

Gill leaves behind a loving family, including his daughter, mother, three brothers, and many cherished friends. A memorial gathering is set for August 15 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Russell & Pica Funeral Home in West Bridgewater, followed by a memorial service on August 16 at 10 a.m.
