Massachusetts has announced the finalists for its new state flag, seal, and motto following the establishment of a dedicated commission. The Seal, Flag and Motto Advisory Committee selected three finalists in each category from over 1,150 submissions received from the public. This initiative aims to create symbols that better represent the state’s diverse history and values.

The review process for the state flag and seal began in 2020 when the state legislature approved the formation of a committee to examine the existing symbols. The current seal, which dates back to the 1700s, depicts a Native American man alongside an arm holding a sword, a representation that has faced criticism from local tribes advocating for change for decades. The existing motto, “Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem,” translates to “By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty.”

Finalist Designs and New Motto Proposals

The finalists for the new state seal and flag can be viewed on the committee’s official website. In addition to the visual representations, the committee has proposed three new motto options: “Multae voces, una res publica,” meaning “Many voices, one commonwealth;” “Bono publico laetamur,” which translates to “We rejoice in the public good;” and “We honor all life guided by the First Light.”

An initial committee examined the symbols in 2023 but did not recommend any changes. In 2024, the Massachusetts legislature established the current Seal, Flag and Motto Advisory Committee to further explore and recommend new symbols that reflect contemporary values and inclusivity.

As Massachusetts moves forward with this rebranding initiative, the community remains engaged in the discussion about what the new symbols will represent and how they will resonate with the state’s rich history and diverse population.
