Young actor Mason Thames has confirmed that filming for the live-action sequel to “How to Train Your Dragon” is set to begin shortly. The announcement comes as Thames promotes his latest projects, “The Black Phone 2,” which releases this weekend, and “Regretting You,” opening next weekend.

Director Dean DeBlois helmed the recent live-action adaptation of the beloved 2010 animated film, which grossed an impressive $635.9 million worldwide against a budget of $150 million. Universal Pictures expressed confidence in the franchise early on, greenlighting a sequel based on the second animated film in the series by April 2023. The release date is scheduled for June 11, 2027.

In an interview with Coming Soon, Thames shared his excitement about the upcoming project. He revealed that following his promotional activities, he will fly to London to commence production in late October. “I get about three days and then I go. Three days is enough to pack and get one good night’s rest and then I’m off and I’m so excited for that,” he stated.

Thames will reprise his role as Hiccup, joined by a talented cast that includes Nico Parker as Astrid, Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast, Nick Frost as Gobber the Belch, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout, Julian Dennison as Fishlegs, Brownyn James as Ruffnut, Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut, and Peter Serafinowicz as Spitelout. DeBlois is expected to return as both writer and director for the sequel, ensuring continuity for the franchise.

The anticipation surrounding “How to Train Your Dragon 2” reflects the success of its predecessor and the enduring popularity of the original animated films. As fans eagerly await the new installment, Thames’s enthusiasm adds to the excitement, promising a fresh yet familiar experience for audiences.

With production set to begin soon, more details are likely to emerge as the film progresses toward its anticipated release in 2027.
