Marvin F. Ritter, Jr., known affectionately as “Joe” or “Marv,” passed away on September 22, 2025, at the age of 82. Surrounded by his loving family in his final moments, he leaves behind a rich legacy defined by warmth, laughter, and a profound love for music and travel. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Joe’s commitment to service extended well beyond his military career.

Born on September 17, 1943, in Elizabeth City, Virginia, Joe was characterized by his jovial spirit. Friends and family often recall his infectious laughter and the twinkle in his eye, which brightened every gathering. His career as a Senior Systems Analyst at Hershey Foods spanned nearly two decades, where he developed solutions that significantly enhanced customer experiences. After retiring in 1999, he embraced a life filled with music and adventure.

A Passion for Music and Travel

Marv’s love for music was a constant throughout his life. He played the trombone for many years, contributing his talents to various bands, including the Keystone Band in Rehrersburg. For an impressive 25 years, he shared his musical gifts with the Washington Band of Annville. His involvement in the arts extended to supporting local youth, as he performed for the Tulpehocken High School Musicals, inspiring young musicians to pursue their passions.

Travel was another cornerstone of Joe’s life. Together with his devoted wife of 54 years, Shirley C. (Simmons) Ritter, they embarked on numerous adventures, from cross-country road trips with their children to leisurely cruises that took them around the globe. Their journey as a family continued to expand, allowing them to create cherished memories with their children and grandchildren alike.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley, and three children: Jeffrey L. Ritter, Kristie B. Grier, wife of Andrew M. Grier, Jr., and Isabelle Condou, partner of Jean-Nicolas Schoeser. His legacy is further carried on by his grandchildren—Samantha D. Grier, Benjamin A. Grier, Asher I. Grier, Holton M. Ritter, Eliana O. Grier, Zachariyah Z. Grier, Nevaeh B. Ritter, Ethan I. Grier, Emilien Sallard, Gabriel Sallard, and Vania Condou-Schoeser. Each of them embodies the joy and values that Joe instilled through his unwavering love.

A Lasting Impact

Joe’s family connections were paramount in his life. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Carol A. (Kimmel) Ritter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin F. Ritter, Sr. and Margaret E. (Clark) Ritter, and his brother, Clark A. Ritter. As family and friends come together to celebrate Joe’s remarkable life, they will remember not only his humor and musical talents but also his deep affection for those around him.

A burial service is scheduled for Monday, September 29, 2025, at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at 11:30 AM. The visitation will be held at Kirkhoff Funeral Home in Bernville on the same day, starting at 1:30 PM, leading into the funeral service at 2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Joe’s name may be directed to the Washington Band of Annville, located at 35 North Lancaster Street, Annville, PA 17003.

Marvin F. Ritter, Jr. will be deeply missed, but his spirit continues to resonate in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy of love and laughter will undoubtedly echo through the lives he touched, much like the notes of a cherished melody.
