As the festive season approaches, the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) is appealing to residents to adopt a furry friend. Currently, nearly 600 dogs are waiting for homes across the county’s shelters, highlighting the pressing need for responsible pet adoption during this time of year.

Kim Powell, communications supervisor for MCACC, shared insights on the situation, stating, “We have about 600 dogs right now between our three shelter locations.” This reflects an ongoing challenge, as the organization faces an influx of lost pets, with approximately 50 to 60 dogs being found each day. The temporary shelter environment, while caring, cannot replicate the warmth and companionship of a permanent home.

While MCACC is keen to find homes for as many dogs as possible during the holidays, Powell cautions potential adopters to think carefully before making the decision. “Just make sure that you’re not only getting it just because it’s for holidays,” she emphasized. The commitment to adoption should involve all family members and extend throughout the dog’s life.

Earlier in the year, on August 23, MCACC organized a successful free adoption event that provided a much-needed boost for many dogs. By waiving adoption fees, the event allowed 197 dogs and puppies to find new families, alleviating some of the shelter’s capacity challenges. “We had an incredible turnout and are very grateful for the community choosing to adopt,” Powell stated, as reported by AZFamily.

Looking ahead, MCACC is set to benefit from the formation of a new nonprofit organization, Friends of Animal Care and Control. This initiative aims to channel additional resources into community programs that address services not covered by the shelter’s main budget. These programs will include essential services such as spay and neuter initiatives, microchipping, and vaccination events. Powell expressed the organization’s aspiration, stating, “We want this place empty,” emphasizing the goal of reserving shelter space only for dogs in urgent need.
