Maccabi GB reflects on a year marked by significant achievements and a strong commitment to the Jewish community in Britain. The organization has navigated challenges with a focus on education, community engagement, and leadership, reaffirming its role as a cornerstone of Jewish life. Over the past year, Maccabi GB has embraced its mission, emphasizing values of strength, belonging, and pride.

This year has been characterized by a remarkable inter-school sports programme, with over 6,000 children participating in various sports, including football, netball, and multi-sport tournaments. These events not only fostered teamwork and confidence but also helped instill a sense of Jewish identity in young participants. The impact of these experiences resonates long after the events, creating lasting memories.

Expanding Community Outreach Through Sport

Maccabi GB’s commitment to grassroots and community sports has expanded significantly. New offerings such as pickleball, padel, 3×3 basketball, and walking football have made sports more accessible. The organization’s Community Fun Run united thousands of participants and 99 charities, creating one of the largest Jewish communal gatherings in the UK.

Internationally, Maccabi GB athletes have continued to train and represent their community with pride. After a postponement, Team Maccabi GB is gearing up for the upcoming Maccabiah Games in Israel in 2025. The delegation’s participation in the JCC Maccabi Games showcased not only sporting prowess but also the core values of responsibility, respect, and connection to Jewish life.

Maccabi GB’s efforts extend beyond physical activities. The organization has taken proactive steps to address rising antisemitism, an issue that has become all too real for Jewish communities worldwide. The Tackling Antisemitism in Sport programme has engaged with the British sporting world to foster understanding and appropriate responses to antisemitism.

This year’s symposium attracted over 120 senior leaders from various sectors to reinforce a commitment to inclusivity and understanding within sports. The organization’s Streetwise programme has reached more than 23,000 young people, focusing on contemporary antisemitism and personal safety. Through practical workshops, participants gain not only knowledge but also the confidence to navigate their environments safely.

Promoting Understanding and Resilience

Maccabi GB also emphasizes the importance of education beyond the Jewish community. The Stand Up! Education Against Discrimination initiative has reached over 17,500 students, addressing discrimination and fostering empathy among diverse groups. This programme aims to build understanding and strengthen the social fabric within society.

Celebratory initiatives, such as the Chanukah Torch Relay, have brought joy and visibility to Jewish life. Engaging with over 3,000 primary school children and various community settings, the relay has been a testament to the resilience and vibrancy of Jewish culture, even in challenging times.

The collaborative spirit of Maccabi GB is pivotal to its success. The organization thrives on partnerships among professionals, volunteers, trustees, and affiliates, all dedicated to its mission. The commitment from each member ensures that Maccabi GB continues to grow and adapt, responding to the needs of the community.

As Chair, I express my gratitude to everyone involved, particularly our professional team whose tireless efforts turn vision into reality. The achievements of this past year illustrate the power of collective action and shared values. Looking ahead, Maccabi GB is poised to further strengthen Jewish life and positively impact society, with a clear strategy and an engaged community committed to its core values.

Maccabi GB envisions a future where a healthy, active, and proud Jewish community is integrated within British society, continuing to thrive and inspire.
