Macaulay Culkin recently reflected on the enduring popularity of the holiday classic ‘Home Alone’ during a screening and Q&A session held at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles. The event celebrated the film’s 35th anniversary and provided an opportunity for the actor to share personal anecdotes about his children’s admiration for the character he famously portrayed, Kevin McCallister.
Culkin revealed that his two children, sons Dakota, aged four, and Carson, aged three, refer to the movie simply as ‘Kevin’. He noted, “They’re like, ‘Wow, Kevin’s really funny.’” Adding a light-hearted touch, he quipped, “He’s also handsome, somebody that your mom might be into,” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Despite his children’s enthusiasm for the film, Culkin has chosen to keep the magic of the movie alive by not revealing his identity as Kevin. “I try to keep the magic alive,” he explained, recounting a moment when his oldest son looked at an old family photograph and remarked, “Who’s that? That looks like Kevin.” In response, Culkin playfully deflected, saying, “Oh, no, nobody, here’s your aunt.”
Reflecting on his career, including his experience as a child actor, Culkin expressed gratitude for his partner, actress Brenda Song. His appreciation was evident when he accepted a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in December 2023. During the ceremony, he acknowledged Song’s unwavering support, stating, “You’re the best woman I’ve ever known. You’ve given me all my purpose. You’ve given me family.”
Culkin and Song first met in 2014 through mutual friends, later reconnecting while filming the 2019 comedy ‘Changeland’. Their relationship blossomed, leading to their engagement in January 2022. A source at the time shared that the couple was “excited for their future together.”
His perspective on ‘Home Alone’ has shifted since becoming a parent. Culkin now finds himself resonating with the character played by Catherine O’Hara, who desperately tries to reunite with her son. During the Q&A, he stated, “Now I can see it through their eyes… It means something completely different.”
When asked if he watches the film with his children, Culkin replied affirmatively, “Of course, this movie is awesome.” He added, “But I don’t watch the movie, I watch them. I watch their eyes. I listen to them laugh. It makes me really proud to be a part of something like that.”
As the screening of ‘Home Alone’ concluded, it was clear that the film continues to resonate across generations. Culkin’s reflections not only highlight the film’s legacy but also emphasize the personal connections that continue to grow around it. With new audiences embracing the film, it stands as a testament to the lasting impact of family-oriented storytelling.
