Nicole Morrone, an award-winning tattoo artist from Poland, Ohio, is defying expectations by creating vibrant and intricate tattoos, despite being born legally blind. Morrone, who has a visual impairment known as nystagmus, can see only a few inches in front of her, with her vision rated at 20/400. Despite this challenge, she has established herself as a talented tattooist, filling her calendar with appointments well into the future.
Her journey into the world of tattooing began during her high school years when she developed a fascination for the craft. “I always just loved tattooing,” Morrone said. “I can legally tattoo, but I cannot legally drive.” After earning a degree in studio art and exploring various careers, she found her passion in tattooing two years ago when she received an apprenticeship at Trademarked Society Tattoo.
Embracing Her Unique Perspective
Initially, Morrone felt the need to inform clients about her visual impairment before their appointments. Over time, she has embraced her condition, integrating it into her personal brand. “Now, it’s just really become part of my brand and just part of who I am,” she explained.
Her work has garnered numerous accolades, with clients praising her expressive use of color. “I just love playing with color. I love expressing myself through color,” Morrone stated. “It’s something that I don’t have to look close at to see.” Her artistry has not only resonated with her clients but also with a wider audience, as evidenced by a video she recently shared detailing her journey, which has amassed over 100,000 views.
The support from her family, friends, and clients has played a significant role in her confidence. “I’ve never had a client not want to get tattooed because of my condition or disability,” she said. “They’ve all embraced it and loved my story, which made me want to share it.” This encouragement has allowed Morrone to speak openly about her experiences and inspire others facing similar challenges.
