The Stage at Burke Junction is set to host a unique event, the Mental Health Awareness Comedy Night, on November 7, 2023, at 17:00. Sponsored by the organization 1° of Separation, this event aims to blend humor with purpose, tackling pressing issues such as depression and suicide. By using comedy as a medium, the goal is to break the stigma surrounding mental health and provide audiences with essential tools for support.

The initiative is the brainchild of Brad Bonar Jr., founder of 1° of Separation. Bonar’s personal journey with depression has shaped the organization’s mission to foster open conversations about mental health through humor. “I’ve struggled at least since the sixth grade, and it’s only been the past few years that I’ve seriously addressed my depression,” Bonar shared. Reflecting on his childhood, he expressed how humor can serve as a gateway to discuss challenging topics.

Since its inception in 2019, 1° of Separation has developed innovative programs that combine clean comedy with mental health first aid. These initiatives have reached diverse audiences, including students, medical professionals, first responders, and military personnel across the United States. Bonar emphasized the importance of laughter, stating, “We laugh at the dark stuff because laughter releases the pain. We talk about depression because no one should feel shame.”

One of the organization’s key resources is the “5 Questions” tool, which empowers participants to engage in meaningful conversations with individuals facing depression or suicidal thoughts. This approach encourages active listening and offers nonjudgmental support, teaching actionable strategies to prevent crises from escalating.

Feedback from participants highlights the impact of this unique approach. Doug, who attended one of the sessions, remarked, “I’ve never heard such an honest and informative talk on mental health and depression than what you all put on.”

The upcoming Mental Health Awareness Comedy Night promises to deliver an engaging performance that combines entertainment with education, ensuring attendees leave with both laughter and practical tools for mental health support.
