UPDATE: The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) has just announced an urgent initiative to bolster security at construction sites in Altadena, California. This comes nearly a year after the devastating Eaton Fire left the community in ruins, with rebuilding efforts now in full swing.
With hundreds of active construction sites across Altadena, law enforcement is moving quickly to prevent theft that could derail progress. The newly launched Construction Check Program aims to safeguard building materials and equipment, critical for homeowners striving to rebuild their lives.
“After crews leave for the day, materials are often left unattended. We’re here to help protect that investment,” stated Capt. Ethan Marquez of the LASD Altadena Station. The program involves deputies conducting targeted patrols and investigating suspicious activities, especially during evenings and weekends when sites are vulnerable.
Families like the Markarians, who are on the verge of moving back into their newly rebuilt home, have expressed relief at the increased patrols. “We’ve noticed sheriff patrols constantly here. That makes a big difference,” said Minas Markarian, highlighting the community’s heightened sense of security.
In addition to LASD efforts, neighbors are banding together, implementing measures like construction fencing, cameras, and improved lighting in dark areas. “Some of our neighbors added cameras and lights because the street gets extremely dark in the evening,” Markarian added, emphasizing community vigilance.
Law enforcement officials report that Altadena’s crime rate is currently at its lowest level on record, a trend they are keen to maintain as more families return to the area. Community members are already feeling the positive impact of heightened awareness. “We’ve had family friends checking on the house, and neighbors have questioned them,” Markarian noted. “We appreciate that. We want to know that everyone here is here for a good reason.”
