UPDATE: Lake Central offensive lineman Matthew Kafka is on a mission to become the top offensive lineman in the Duneland Athletic Conference as the 2025 season approaches. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 290 pounds, Kafka is gearing up for his third season as a starter, determined to elevate both his game and his team.
“I want to be regarded as the top of the top, the top of the DAC,” Kafka stated emphatically. This urgency comes as Lake Central seeks to improve on its recent record, aiming for a winning season for the first time since 2014.
Kafka’s commitment to excellence was evident this summer as he attended various college recruitment camps, receiving five offers which could lead to more opportunities. “That put a lot of things in perspective,” he reflected, highlighting a newfound dedication to his training and nutrition. His offseason regimen has seen him increase his bench press from 250 to 325 pounds and his squat from 475 to 550 pounds.
Last season, Kafka played through a calf injury that limited his performance, but he is now fully recovered and ready to shine at the guard position. “I’m 100% fine now,” Kafka confirmed, signaling a strong comeback as the season kicks off.
Lake Central coach Pete Koulianos praised Kafka’s leadership and versatility, stating, “He’s one of the strongest kids in our program. He’s a student of the game.” Koulianos, a former Lake Central player himself, is eager to see how Kafka can drive the team forward this year.
Teammate Will Sandoval echoed this sentiment, calling Kafka “the leader of the O-line” and expressing confidence in their bond as teammates. “It’s fun,” Sandoval added, showcasing the camaraderie that fuels their efforts on the field.
As Lake Central prepares for its season opener, Kafka’s aspirations are set high. “Always, 100%, the goal is to go to state, win state,” he declared, reinforcing his determination to not just compete but to excel. His leadership and relentless drive could be the catalyst Lake Central needs to break a streak of mediocrity and reclaim its competitive stature.
With the season fast approaching, all eyes will be on Kafka as he seeks to lead Lake Central to success. Fans and teammates alike are hopeful that this year will mark a turning point for the program, driven by Kafka’s ambition and hard work.
