Lafayette is introducing a Halloween costume exchange aimed at promoting sustainability and community engagement. Running through September 29, 2023, residents can donate “gently used” costumes at designated drop-off locations, which include the Lafayette Public Library at 775 W. Baseline Road, the Bob L. Burger Recreation Center at 111 W. Baseline Road, and the Erie Community Center at 450 Powers St.

The collection will culminate at the city’s Mini-Con event on October 4, 2023, where attendees can browse and acquire costumes at no cost. This initiative not only allows participants to save money on new outfits but also aims to minimize waste by keeping previously used costumes out of landfills.

Engaging Community Events at Mini-Con

The Mini-Con, hosted at the Lafayette Public Library, promises a vibrant array of activities that cater to diverse interests. In addition to costume exchanges, the event will feature art workshops and a special appearance by graphic novelist R. Alan Brooks. Attendees can also look forward to unique experiences such as Drag Queen Storytime, science experiments conducted by the School of Mines, magic performances by Ann Lincoln, and face painting.

This costume exchange and associated events reflect Lafayette’s commitment to fostering community spirit while encouraging environmentally friendly practices. By reusing costumes, the initiative not only supports families looking for affordable Halloween options but also promotes a culture of sustainability.

The city’s announcement highlights the importance of community involvement in making Halloween a more eco-friendly celebration. Residents are encouraged to participate actively by donating costumes and attending the Mini-Con, reinforcing the message that sustainability can be both fun and festive.
