Kristaps Porzingis made a return to the court on Saturday night after missing six games due to health issues, contributing nine points in a 104-97 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. This marked his second game with the Golden State Warriors since being acquired from the Atlanta Hawks on February 4, 2024.
Prior to the game, Porzingis expressed optimism about his recovery, stating, “I felt like my body is coming back to what it needs to be.” He reported feeling decent after a workout leading up to the match. Porzingis logged 23 minutes against the Thunder, recording five rebounds, five assists, and one block in addition to his scoring.
Health Challenges and Recovery
Porzingis’s journey back to health has been fraught with challenges. After a brief debut with the Warriors against the Boston Celtics, he experienced a sudden illness that sidelined him for an extended period. This illness has been linked to postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a condition that can result in increased heart rate, dizziness, and fatigue. The Celtics medical team diagnosed him with this condition following a virus he contracted last February.
Despite his health struggles, Porzingis remains focused on his performance. “Especially getting traded somewhere else, I wanted to get out there as soon as possible,” he noted. Although he felt “a little heavy” during the game, he expressed his desire to regain his rhythm as the postseason approaches. “Only 20 games left or so, I want to catch a really good rhythm and see if we can do anything in the postseason,” he added.
Controversy and Team Dynamics
The situation surrounding Porzingis’s health has not been without controversy. Warriors coach Steve Kerr recently made headlines when he commented on local radio that Porzingis did not actually have POTS, which he later retracted, calling it a “stupid mistake.” Porzingis addressed the mix-up, saying, “It wasn’t ideal… it put something out again.” He reassured Kerr that he understood the comment was not intended to create hype around his health.
As the Warriors navigate their season, Porzingis is set to rest during the upcoming game against the Utah Jazz on Monday night, part of a back-to-back schedule. The team plans to utilize him in their home game against the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday.
Porzingis’s return is crucial for the Warriors as they prepare for the playoffs. His performance will be closely monitored as he seeks to make a significant impact in the remaining games of the season.
