During its final meeting of 2025, the Kingston Common Council bid farewell to four outgoing members, marking a significant transition for the local governance. The meeting, held earlier this week, served as a platform to acknowledge the contributions of these lawmakers who will not return in the new year.
The incoming council will convene for the first time on January 6, 2026, with a mix of newly elected members and returning incumbents. The council will maintain its Democratic majority, comprising four newcomers and five incumbents. This nine-member body will face the task of selecting a new Majority Leader, as Reynolds Scott-Childress, who has served in this role for a decade, will not be returning.
Recognizing Contributions and Welcoming New Faces
Along with Scott-Childress, three other council members will conclude their service. Jeanne Edwards of Ward 4, Bryant Drew Andrews of Ward 7, and Steve Schabot of Ward 8, who has served for twelve years, will also step down. Following the meeting, Andrea Shaut, the Common Council President, expressed gratitude for the dedication and service of Scott-Childress, Edwards, Andrews, and Schabot.
The newly elected members joining the council include Marissa Marvelli of Ward 3, Benjamin Falk of Ward 4, Teryl Mickens of Ward 5, and Ruth Katz of Ward 8. Returning incumbents are Sara Pasti of Ward 1, Michael Tierney of Ward 2, Teryl Mickens of Ward 5, Bob Dennison of Ward 6, and Michele Hirsch of Ward 9.
Implications of Local Election Changes
Members of the Kingston Common Council serve a two-year term. A recent change in state law that shifts most local elections to even years will not affect the timing of elections in Kingston. This ensures that the newly elected council will begin its term with a clear mandate from the community.
The transition marks a new chapter for the Kingston Common Council as it prepares to address the needs and concerns of residents in the upcoming term. With fresh perspectives and a commitment to public service, the newly formed council aims to continue the work of fostering community engagement and implementing effective policies.
