King Charles is transforming the historic Dumfries House into a luxurious wedding venue with a renovation budget of $8.7 million. The plans include extending the 18th-century manor’s east wing to create a public hall of 4,600 square feet that will accommodate up to 200 guests. The venue aims to attract couples seeking a royal wedding experience, with the first events planned for July 2027.
Dumfries House, located in Ayrshire, is part of The King’s Foundation and has been a focal point of King Charles’s efforts to revitalize heritage sites. Originally constructed between 1754 and 1759 by architect Robert Adam, the estate has undergone extensive renovations since its acquisition in 2007, when the then Prince of Wales described the purchase as an “appalling risk.” The King emphasized that the restoration was not just about preserving the estate but also about benefiting the local community.
The renovation will utilize locally-sourced materials, ensuring that the extension maintains a connection to the region’s heritage. The charity overseeing the project intends for the venue to become a premier choice for high-end weddings and private events on both national and international scales.
The estate’s transformation has already drawn attention, resulting in an hour-long documentary titled A Royal Grand Design, narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Richard E. Grant. The film, which aired on ITV in 2022, showcased King Charles’s personal involvement in the project, from sourcing materials to overseeing intricate design details. He highlighted the importance of heritage-led regeneration, stating, “I knew if we hadn’t stepped in and saved it, somebody would have bought it and said they had a great idea, you know, for golf courses and things.”
