As summer arrives, many Americans are venturing outdoors, but a significant health concern is emerging. On July 31, 2025, singer Justin Timberlake revealed that he is among the estimated 476,000 individuals diagnosed with Lyme disease annually in the United States. This illness, often transmitted through tick bites, has been described by Timberlake as “relentlessly debilitating.” His statement comes as emergency room visits related to tick bites have surged, reaching their highest level in five years.

According to data from the CDC, emergency department visits for tick bites have already exceeded nearly a decade’s worth of records for July, with a notable rate of 92 visits per 100,000 people reported nationwide. The most affected demographics include children aged 0 to 9 and individuals over 70.

Factors Behind the Surge in Tick Bites

Experts attribute the rise in tick-related illnesses to various factors, with climate change playing a significant role. The Binghamton University Tick-borne Disease Center has noted that rising temperatures allow ticks to expand their habitats further north than previously possible. Mandy Roome, the center’s associate director, explained, “Ticks can now move further north than they could before and establish populations.” She emphasized that mild winters contribute to longer periods of tick activity, as deer ticks remain active whenever temperatures exceed 4 degrees Celsius.

In addition to climate change, land use practices are also contributing to the increasing tick population. Roome mentioned that construction activities can create new habitats for small animals like mice, which serve as carriers for tick-borne pathogens. Cassandra Pierre, an assistant professor of infectious diseases at Boston University, stated, “When their ranges and numbers increase, we absolutely are going to see an expansion of ticks. Longer, warmer weather also allows for more exposure to ticks, because people are out more.”

The Dangers of Tick Bites

Ticks pose serious health risks as they can transmit several diseases to both humans and animals. Lyme disease, for example, is contracted through bites from ticks carrying the Borrelia bacteria. The CDC lists various other pathogens that can be transmitted through tick bites, highlighting the potential dangers associated with these small creatures.

To mitigate the risk of tick bites, it is essential to take precautions when in areas where ticks are prevalent, such as parks, backyards, or campsites. While ticks can be a year-round threat, they are most active during the warmer months, specifically from April through September.

As awareness grows about the risks posed by ticks, Timberlake’s experience sheds light on the importance of recognizing and addressing this public health issue. With the number of tick bites on the rise, it remains crucial for individuals to stay informed and take necessary preventive measures.
