John Pitchess, a cherished community member and devoted family man, passed away peacefully at his home in Newport Beach on November 24, 2025. He was 83 years old. Just days before his death, John enjoyed a memorable weekend surrounded by his family, reflecting the love and legacy he cultivated throughout his life.
Born on March 21, 1942, in Kansas City, Missouri, John was the son of Athena and Peter J. Pitchess. His father served as an FBI agent before becoming Sheriff of Los Angeles County from 1958 to 1981. Shortly after John’s birth, the Pitchess family relocated to Southern California, where they established their permanent home.
John graduated from Arcadia High School in 1960 and Pasadena City College in 1962. He continued his education at the University of Southern California, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business in 1965 and a Master of Business Administration in 1967. While at USC, he was an active member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.
Family Legacy and Professional Journey
John’s enduring partnership with his wife, Wendy Marquand, began in their high school years. Their relationship blossomed after John’s brother, Andy, set them up on a date during their time at Pasadena City College. The couple married in 1965 and welcomed three children: Peter John Pitchess II in 1967, Julie Secrist Browman in 1969, and Kathleen Pitchess O’Connell in 1975.
In 1972, the family moved to Turtle Rock in Irvine, where they built a life centered on community and family values. John’s professional career was primarily in the insurance industry, where he co-founded several commercial insurance brokerages, including Pitchess & Perricone Insurance and Pitchess Insurance Associates, both based in Newport Beach. He concluded his career at EPIC Insurance in Irvine.
A Passion for Sports and Community Engagement
Sports represented a profound passion for John, particularly USC athletics and the various teams his children played on. He dedicated numerous seasons to coaching baseball, basketball, softball, and soccer, earning a reputation as a compassionate and encouraging coach. His mentorship fostered lasting friendships with former players and their families.
As a devoted fan, John rarely missed a game, becoming a familiar face at University High School events and USC football games. He held season tickets for over 40 years and was renowned for hosting exceptional tailgates. In later years, he shifted his enthusiastic support to his grandchildren, cheering them on with the same fervor he had shown his own children.
John was also actively engaged in his community. He was a Gold Cup member of the Noble Vikings of Orange County and participated in El Viaje de Portola, often competing on the bocce court. He enjoyed many memorable rounds of golf at Aliso Viejo Country Club and supported local organizations, including Hoag Hospital and the Harbor Area Boys & Girls Club.
After 59 years of marriage, Wendy passed away in August 2024 following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. John now reunites with her in eternal peace.
He is survived by his children, Peter Pitchess (Teri), Julie Secrist Browman (Taylor), and Kathleen O’Connell (Michael), along with eight grandchildren: Ford Secrist (Maddy), Jack Pitchess, Siena Secrist, Katie Browman, Sadie Pitchess, Preston Pitchess, Logan O’Connell, and Caiden O’Connell.
A service honoring John’s life is scheduled for December 21, 2025, at Pacific View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hoag Hospital in John’s name.
