Driver Joey Logano of Team Penske has opened up about his strong partnership with crew chief Paul Wolfe, highlighting the unique dynamic that has evolved since they began working together in the 2020 season. Their collaboration has already led to 14 wins and two NASCAR Cup championships in 2022 and 2024, with both now aiming for another title as the NASCAR playoffs commence with the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

In a strategic move, team owner Roger Penske decided to pair Logano with Wolfe, who previously served as the crew chief for Logano’s teammate, Brad Keselowski, from 2011 to 2019. This successful partnership yielded 29 wins and a championship in 2012, prompting Penske to seek fresh chemistry for Logano as the 2020 season approached.

Building a Brotherhood on the Track

Logano describes his relationship with Wolfe as akin to that of siblings. Their shared objective is clear: to not only secure race victories but also to claim championships. Logano’s recent success—winning two of the last three Cup championships, with teammate Ryan Blaney claiming the title in 2023—reflects their effective collaboration.

“Paul has like a never enough attitude,” Logano remarked during a recent NASCAR Cup playoff Media Day. “He’s like a big brother that you want to make proud.”

Wolfe’s high standards extend beyond racing; they permeate every aspect of his life, driving both men to continuously strive for excellence. Logano admires Wolfe’s disciplined lifestyle, describing him as someone who motivates the team to elevate their performance.

Competitive Drive and Transparent Communication

Logano appreciates the competitive spirit they share, acknowledging that both thrive on the desire to outperform others. “I want to be better than that,” he stated, emphasizing the constant motivation to impress Wolfe. He noted that Wolfe’s probing questions often encourage him to reflect on his choices, such as his nutrition and preparation, which can impact performance on the track.

The foundation of their successful partnership lies in honesty. Logano underscored the importance of transparent communication, especially during challenging times. “As soon as you guys start making up stories or lying to each other, that’s the end,” he explained, drawing parallels between their working relationship and personal relationships.

As the NASCAR playoffs approach, Logano enters with one win, three top-five finishes, and seven top-ten finishes this season—less than ideal for a competitor of his caliber. Yet, both he and Wolfe maintain hope for a turnaround similar to previous playoff performances.

“You’ve got to have those hard conversations,” Logano noted, acknowledging the occasional frustrations that arise within their dynamic, akin to a marriage. “You have to be able to talk things out and see each other’s perspectives.” This commitment to candid dialogue has been pivotal in strengthening their bond.

With the playoffs beginning, Logano’s focus is on reclaiming his championship status. He aims to replicate his past successes in 2018, 2022, and 2024, as he and Wolfe continue to navigate the challenges of the racing season together.
