Jenna Bush Hager has shared that her father, former President George W. Bush, does not watch her show, humorously dismissing it as a “dumb show.” During the November 19 episode of “Today with Jenna & Friends,” she expressed doubt about his willingness to guest host on the program. Despite her efforts to persuade him, it appears he remains unconvinced.
The discussion unfolded as Jenna and her co-host Hoda Kotb celebrated the fifth anniversary of their show at The Loren at Pink Beach in Bermuda. Jenna mentioned that she frequently invites her father to join her as a guest, but he typically responds with comments like, “I don’t watch your dumb show.” The admission drew laughter from her colleagues, including Al Roker and Carson Daly, who noted, “That’s why we love him.”
After observing her father appear on the “Manningcast” with Peyton Manning and Eli Manning, Jenna hopes to make another attempt to convince him to join her on “Today.” She remarked, “I’ve actually asked him, and maybe I’ll do a public ask for him to come and be a friend since he’s my father.” Jenna, who has three children with her husband Henry Hager, expressed surprise at her father’s recent television appearance, stating, “He said he was retired so I was surprised as anyone to see him on Monday night.”
Savannah Guthrie pointed out that it might have been easier for the former president to participate in the “Manningcast,” as he could join from his art studio in Texas without needing to travel. Roker suggested that Jenna could consider filming from Texas to accommodate her father’s schedule. This prompted Jenna to question, “Do we have that kind of money?” Melvin chimed in, humorously suggesting that the budget could be found for a former president.
Reflecting on President Bush’s viewing habits, Jenna shared that his reluctance to watch the show has often been a topic among the “Today” hosts. In a light-hearted exchange, she recalled a time when he responded to her questioning about watching the show by saying “No.” She interjected, “Dad, you’re supposed to say yes. Remember, last night — you do watch me some.” On another occasion, he confirmed that he watches her “occasionally,” adding that he is very proud of her accomplishments.
The playful banter surrounding Jenna’s relationship with her father highlights the unique dynamics of having a former president in the family. Despite his reluctance to engage in her television endeavors, the love and pride he has for his daughter are evident. As Jenna continues her efforts to bring him onto her show, fans of both the former president and the daytime talk show will be watching closely for any sign of a collaboration.
