UPDATE: The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has just issued an urgent travel advisory for southern Jefferson County as relentless lake effect snow continues to batter the region. Authorities warn that travel conditions are now considered “very difficult to impossible” due to heavy snowfall and dangerously low visibility.

Overnight snowfall has significantly impacted southern Jefferson, northern Oswego, and western Lewis counties, with the National Weather Service confirming a winter storm warning in effect until 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Accumulations are expected to reach between 2 to 4 feet in the most persistent snow bands, accompanied by winds gusting up to 35 mph and blowing snow. Wind chills are forecast to plummet as low as -10 degrees overnight.

The snow bands are anticipated to drift north and south throughout the day, with the greater Watertown area likely facing severe weather conditions this morning. The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that road conditions can change rapidly as lake effect snow typically falls in narrow bands, resulting in deep snow cover and extremely poor visibility.

Local officials strongly advise residents to check weather forecasts before considering travel. Those who must venture out should wear or bring suitable outerwear for extreme temperatures.

With the snow not expected to let up, the community is advised to prepare for difficult travel conditions through at least mid-week. Stay tuned for further updates as conditions develop.
