Japan’s animation industry achieved remarkable growth in 2024, recording a revenue increase of 14.8 percent to reach an impressive **$25 billion** (3.8 trillion yen). This surge is largely attributed to the growing international appeal of Japanese anime, as highlighted in the latest findings from the **Association of Japanese Animations** (AJA). The preliminary results were shared at the TIFFCOM content market, a key event held alongside the **Tokyo International Film Festival**.

The report reveals that international sales are now a dominant force in the anime sector, accounting for **56 percent** of total revenue, or **$14.25 billion** (2.17 trillion yen). In contrast, domestic revenue reached **$10.97 billion** (1.67 trillion yen), representing **44 percent** of the overall earnings. Overseas revenues displayed a significant year-on-year increase of **26 percent**, while local sales experienced a modest rise of **2.8 percent**.

International Demand Drives Growth

The growth trajectory of the anime industry has been robust, with 2024 marking the second strongest year since 2019, when sales rose by **15.3 percent**. According to **Masahiko Hasegawa**, the lead author of the AJA report, the gap between international and domestic revenue is expected to continue widening. He noted, “The overseas market now far exceeds local revenues, and this gap will only widen.”

Hasegawa also emphasized that growth is no longer limited to content distribution. It now includes bundled contracts encompassing theatrical rights, streaming, merchandising, and events, which have contributed to the industry’s expansion.

The report did not factor in the recent phenomenal success of **Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle**, released on **September 12, 2024**. This film has shattered records, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time with over **$670 million** generated at the global box office. Following closely, the offbeat anime fantasy **Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc** has also made a significant impact, earning **$139 million** since its release on **October 24, 2024**. Both films were released by **Sony’s anime unit, Crunchyroll**, in collaboration with **Sony Pictures**.

Consistent Growth Amid Challenges

The AJA has meticulously collected industry data for **22 years**, revealing a continuous upward trend since **2009**. Notably, the sector maintained its growth trajectory during the pandemic, with international revenue overtaking domestic sales for the first time in **2020**.

The report further highlights the performance of anime studios, which serve as the backbone of the industry. In 2024, these studios experienced a record **9.1 percent** growth, achieving total sales of **$3.06 billion** (466.2 billion yen). Notably, international revenue for these studios reached **$781 million** (118.8 billion yen), underlining the vital role of creative output from Japan in driving the global success of anime.

As the anime industry continues to flourish, it demonstrates not only its resilience but also its potential for further expansion in the international market. With a growing audience worldwide, the future looks promising for Japan’s beloved art form.
