James Van Der Beek is sharing a candid update about his health journey as he continues to navigate life after his diagnosis of colorectal cancer. In an exclusive interview with Craig Melvin on TODAY, the actor, known for his role in the iconic series Dawson’s Creek, expressed gratitude for his support system and his determination to remain active in his career.
The 48-year-old actor revealed that he is currently undergoing treatment while continuing to work. He described himself as “really fortunate in an unfortunate diagnosis,” reflecting on the challenges he has faced since announcing his cancer diagnosis last year. Van Der Beek’s absence from a recent Dawson’s Creek reunion event raised concerns among fans, but he clarified that it was due to stomach issues, not his cancer treatment.
Health Journey and Awareness
Van Der Beek discussed the initial symptoms that led to his diagnosis, which he described as subtle changes that he did not initially associate with serious illness. “I was so healthy, was in amazing cardiovascular shape,” he said, noting that he had been actively practicing wellness routines like cold plunges and intermittent fasting. “I had Stage 3 cancer and had no idea.”
His symptoms included changes in bowel habits, prompting him to seek medical advice. After a colonoscopy at the age of 46, he received the shocking news. “I went into shock,” he recalled, reflecting on the silence of the ride home with his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek. The couple has since been open with their six children about his illness, fostering an environment of honesty and resilience within the family.
Van Der Beek urges others to prioritize their health, recommending that individuals aged 45 and over consider regular screenings for colorectal cancer. He stated, “If anybody takes anything away from this interview, it would be get tested, talk to your doctor.”
Family Support and Personal Growth
The actor credits his wife for her unwavering support throughout his treatment. “She’s become a caregiver, nurse, the head of the household,” he said, emphasizing her role in managing family responsibilities while he focuses on his health. Van Der Beek expressed pride in how their children have adapted to the situation: “Kids know if you’re not right… Their request to me… is, ‘Just be honest with us. We want to know.’”
He shared that while he experiences moments of fear, he also recognizes the personal growth that has emerged from his diagnosis. “The hardest part has been the patience this has required,” he admitted. Yet, he believes cancer has ultimately enriched his life, providing him with a new perspective on presence and self-love. “What I realized was I’m still worthy of love,” he reflected, underscoring the importance of emotional well-being during challenging times.
In addition to focusing on his health and family, Van Der Beek has wrapped filming for the prequel series to Legally Blonde, set to stream on Amazon Prime Video. He expressed enthusiasm for his upcoming projects and a desire to return to Broadway, stating that stage acting has always been his first love.
Through this journey, Van Der Beek has cultivated a deeper connection to his faith, emphasizing that his experiences have transformed how he views his relationship with God. “To be good stewards of our relationships with other people… is connecting to whatever that force of God’s love is,” he said, highlighting the importance of community and connection in his life.
As he continues to face the challenges of cancer treatment, Van Der Beek remains hopeful and committed to raising awareness about the importance of early detection, while cherishing the moments he shares with his family.
