James V. “Jim” Gearhart, an esteemed educator and community member, passed away on December 27, 2025, at the age of 80. He was a long-time resident of Fellowship Community in Whitehall, Pennsylvania, and the devoted husband of Carol Gearhart for 48 years.
Born on May 15, 1945, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Jim was the son of the late Vernon and Elinor Gearhart. He distinguished himself early on as the Valedictorian of his class at John Harris High School. Following his high school graduation, he pursued higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree in history from Haverford College.
Jim dedicated 30 years to Kutztown University, where he served as Chief Budget Officer. His professional life was marked by a commitment to education and financial management, helping to shape the academic experience for countless students.
Outside of his professional commitments, Jim had a variety of interests and hobbies. He enjoyed reading, traveling, and vacationing in Stone Harbor, New Jersey. His passion for sports and photography complemented his rich personal life, which he shared with family and friends.
Jim was an active member of Cedar Crest Bible Fellowship Church in Allentown, where he contributed to the community through his faith and service. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Carol, as well as daughters Diana J. Blackford and her husband, Ty, of Sidney, Ohio, and Amy E. Wesner and her husband, Eric, of Bethel. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Simon, Anderson, and Eva Blackford, along with Jamie and Paul Wesner. Jim was predeceased by his brother, John Gearhart.
Memorial Service Details
A service honoring Jim’s life will take place on January 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Zentz Community Center, located at 3000 Fellowship Drive, Whitehall. The service will be officiated by Rev. Carl Fischer Jr. Prior to the service, family and friends are invited to gather from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Following the memorial service, a private interment will be held at Laureldale Cemetery in Reading. The Heintzelman-Stephens Funeral Home, P.C. is managing the arrangements.
