Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen (17) and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (9) shake hands at the conclusion of a Week 9 NFL football game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals, Monday, Nov. 6, 2023, at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati.

The ongoing discussion surrounding NFL quarterbacks intensified recently, thanks to comments made by Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. During an interview on the “Up And Adams Show,” hosted by NFL media personality Kay Adams, Chase defended his quarterback, Joe Burrow, amid comparisons to Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills. This debate arises as both quarterbacks have emerged as elite players in the league, with differing styles and strengths.

EA Sports recently released player ratings for “Madden 26,” which positioned Burrow, alongside Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, among the top quarterbacks. Jackson and Allen received the coveted 99 rating, while Burrow earned a score of 97 and Mahomes received 95. Chase himself received a 99 rating after an outstanding 2024-25 season where he achieved 127 receptions, amassed 1,708 yards, and scored 17 touchdowns, according to ESPN statistics.

When asked why Burrow deserves a 99 rating, Chase highlighted his quarterback’s unique skill set. “Honestly, I feel like he has it all,” Chase stated. He emphasized attributes such as timing, accuracy, placement, speed, awareness, and field recognition. Chase also noted that defenses prepare for Burrow’s offensive weapons rather than focusing solely on him, contrasting this with the game plan against Allen.

This discussion has reignited debates among fans and analysts, as both quarterbacks were contenders for the 2024 NFL MVP award, which ultimately went to Allen. The Buffalo quarterback secured this prestigious honor for the first time in his career, underscoring the competitive nature of their rivalry.

Allen, standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 237 pounds, is known for being a versatile playmaker. His combination of arm strength, intelligence, speed, and physicality allows him to be a significant threat in both the passing and running game. In contrast, Burrow exemplifies a more traditional quarterback approach. He is recognized for his methodical playing style, dissecting defenses with precision, heightened football IQ, and strong awareness on the field.

As Chase pointed out, defenses often prioritize containing the Bengals’ offensive stars, including Chase and fellow wide receiver Tee Higgins. This strategy differs from the approach taken against Allen, who has consistently demonstrated his ability to excel regardless of the surrounding talent.

The debate between the two quarterbacks is unlikely to reach a definitive conclusion until one secures a Super Bowl title. Until then, the competition between Burrow and Allen will continue to captivate fans, analysts, and players alike, as their respective journeys unfold in the high-stakes environment of the NFL.
