Intel has announced plans to reduce its workforce by more than 400 positions in the Bay Area as part of ongoing restructuring efforts. The company will cut a total of **410 jobs** in Santa Clara, where its headquarters is located, according to a notice submitted to the California Employment Development Department.
The layoffs will occur across several facilities. At the Bowers Avenue location, two positions will be eliminated, while **216 jobs** will be cut at the Juliette Lane facility and eight at the Laurelwood Road site. The largest number of layoffs, **184 positions**, will take place at the Mision College Boulevard facility.
Job Cuts Extend Beyond the Bay Area
In addition to the cuts in the Bay Area, Intel will reduce its workforce by **174 jobs** at its Folsom facility in Sacramento County. This brings the total number of layoffs in this round to **584 positions**, all of which are classified as permanent. These job cuts are set to take effect on **July 15, 2024**.
This announcement follows another round of layoffs earlier this month, when **110 employees** were let go. In the previous month, **107 jobs** were cut locally, contributing to a broader trend of job reductions that have also affected facilities in Oregon, Arizona, and Texas. Recently, Intel made headlines by shutting down its automotive division, further underscoring the company’s strategic shift.
Context of Layoffs in the Tech Industry
The timing of these layoffs is particularly notable, as rival chipmakers have seen significant market gains. Just this week, a competitor was recognized as Wall Street’s most valuable company. This juxtaposition highlights the challenges Intel faces amid a rapidly evolving industry landscape.
The ongoing restructuring at Intel reflects a broader trend within the technology sector, where companies are reassessing their workforce needs in response to market dynamics. As the company navigates these changes, the impact on its employees and the surrounding communities in California remains a pressing concern.
