In a proactive effort to safeguard community health, the Imperial County Public Health Department (ICPHD) initiated its 2025-2026 flu vaccination campaign with a clinic at Imperial Valley College on September 30, 2025. This event provided free access to the seasonal flu vaccine for students, faculty, and staff, highlighting the significance of early vaccination as the winter months approach.
Dr. Stephen Munday, the County Public Health Officer, stated, “The Public Health Department strongly encourages all individuals who are eligible to get their flu vaccine early to help protect themselves and their loved ones.” He underscored the importance of this initiative, particularly as holiday gatherings are known to increase flu transmission.
Flu Season Severity and Risks
This year’s push for vaccinations follows concerning data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The 2024-2025 influenza season was noted as the most severe since the 2017-2018 season, with significant increases in outpatient visits, hospitalizations, and flu-related deaths.
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness that can lead to symptoms such as fever, cough, severe fatigue, and muscle aches. While anyone can contract the illness, certain groups are at higher risk for serious complications, including adults aged 65 and older, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic health conditions.
Health officials emphasize that receiving an annual flu shot is the most effective method to prevent the illness and lessen its potential severity. For those unable to attend the college clinic, the flu vaccine is still available. The ICPHD offers the vaccine for $2 by appointment or on a walk-in basis during regular business hours, which are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Upcoming Clinics and Broader Vaccination Efforts
The Public Health Department plans to hold additional community clinics at various locations throughout the county. Details regarding these future events will be shared on the department’s website and social media platforms. Residents can also obtain vaccinations at most local medical offices and pharmacies and are encouraged to reach out directly to their healthcare provider for availability.
In addition to flu vaccinations, the CDC recommends that individuals stay current on immunizations for other respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19 and RSV, to ensure comprehensive protection.
