UPDATE: Hulu’s groundbreaking special, “HIV Unwrapped,” is set to stream on November 30, 2023, and air on the ABC Owned Television Stations’ Localish Network on December 1, 2023. This innovative program merges the worlds of fashion and science to combat the stigma surrounding HIV, aiming to change the narrative through storytelling.

In an unprecedented collaboration, design students from the Parsons School of Design worked closely with leading HIV scientists to create garments that reflect the complexities of living with HIV. Executive producer Karl Schmid, co-founder of +Life Media, emphasized the importance of merging these two fields. “We are taking science, really complex science, and fashion—two worlds that you don’t normally think come together,” Schmid stated. “But they do, and that’s a really important message.”

The special will provide an inside look at the creative process behind the fashion show, highlighting how designers and scientists collaborated to bring forth a powerful message. The event also aims to showcase the diverse stories of individuals living with HIV, emphasizing that “we are more than the worst thing that has happened to us,” according to participant Bianca Ordoñez.

This unique approach to storytelling is not only about fashion; it’s about fostering understanding and empathy. “Fashion is a portal to creating ideas and telling a unique story,” said Shreya Jani, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs at Gilead Sciences. “If fashion can remind people of the importance of ending HIV, then we will take it.”

As the date for the special approaches, anticipation is building among advocates and audiences alike. Schmid has previously taken “HIV Unwrapped” to Australia, England, and Rwanda, and is excited to bring this crucial conversation to New York City. “Just show what collaboration can do,” he noted. “It’s a powerful message, especially in today’s world.”

This timely initiative not only highlights the intersection of art and science but also serves as a vital reminder of the ongoing fight against HIV stigma. The fashion show aims to inspire viewers to engage in meaningful conversations about health, identity, and resilience.

As we count down to November 30, the excitement grows for a special that promises to reshape perceptions and engage audiences on a deeply human level. Stay tuned for more updates and be ready to share this inspiring story as we approach World AIDS Day.
