A historic vacation property near New Braunfels, Texas, has undergone a significant transformation with the launch of Petit Cowboy. The Austin-based boutique hotel group, French Cowboys, announced the opening of this newly renovated retreat located at 1020 N. Houston Ave. The property, which previously operated under names such as Ulbricht’s Summer Resort and Heidelberg Lodges, now features a vibrant, beach-inspired aesthetic. An introductory promotion offers guests a complimentary third night for bookings made in March 2023.
Originally established in the 1930s, the property consists of 23 cabins with a total of 48 rooms. French Cowboys acquired the site in 2025 and focused on revitalizing both the exterior and interior, enhancing its appeal for year-round visitors. The goal, as stated by co-founder Franklin Dusserre, is to preserve the legacy of the property while ensuring that it remains functional and enjoyable for future generations.
Modern Amenities with a Nostalgic Twist
The new design retains the essence of summer camp nostalgia, showcasing cheerful color palettes and mid-century-style furnishings. Guests can enjoy unique touches such as pennants featuring playful French-Texan phrases, which add to the lighthearted atmosphere. Additionally, the cabins have been equipped with improved storage solutions, new beds, and refreshed bathroom finishes. Kitchenettes now come with two-burner cooktops and compact refrigerators, enhancing guests’ convenience.
Accommodations cater to a range of needs, with six different room types that can accommodate 2 to 6 guests, including dogs for a nightly fee of $40. Some rooms also feature breakfast bars, living areas, and pull-out sofas, making it easier for families or groups to enjoy their stay.
Outdoor amenities have also received updates. The main swimming pool and a shallow pool will be maintained year-round, complemented by new loungers for a more comfortable experience. Guests will find communal game areas, grilling spaces, and a refurbished pickleball court for recreation.
Diverse Dining Options Enhance Guest Experience
Dining at Petit Cowboy is available at the Pool House & Bar, which offers a variety of snacks and meals throughout the day. Menu highlights include signature pop-tarts, croissants, chilled fruit, salads, and kid-friendly pizzas and sandwiches. A brownie sundae will evoke memories of childhood camp experiences, further enriching the retreat’s nostalgic charm.
French Cowboys has previously restored other properties, such as Hacienda del Rio in Gruene, which features Spanish colonial influences. Co-founder Dylan Petrich emphasized the importance of preserving the community ties and historical significance of properties like Petit Cowboy, stating, “Our role is to preserve what makes it special while making it functional for how people travel today.”
Nightly rates at Petit Cowboy start at $129 for Deluxe King rooms. The “Stay 2, Get 1” promotion allows guests to enjoy an additional night at no charge when booking a two-night stay in March. This offer is available for redemption until December 31, 2026, using the code PETITCOWBOY, although some dates may not be available.
With its blend of historical charm and modern amenities, Petit Cowboy aims to attract both returning visitors and newcomers looking for a unique getaway in the heart of Texas.
