UPDATE: Highland’s sophomore quarterback Aaron McCormack made an impressive debut, leading the Trojans to a 28-13 victory over the Whiting Oilers on September 1, 2023. After expressing some initial nerves, McCormack stepped up to throw for 153 yards and two touchdowns, while also contributing a rushing touchdown.
“I was a little nervous at first, but once I settled in, after my first throw to my tight end, I just felt good,” McCormack stated after the game. His first pass was a stunning 64-yard touchdown to tight end Connor Harrington, setting the tone for the night. McCormack’s performance included a 35-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Nathan Phillips, showcasing his ability to connect with his teammates effectively.
This victory marks a significant turnaround for Highland (1-1), which had lost its season opener against Griffith. Coach Ben Geffert praised McCormack, stating, “He did an outstanding job leading the huddle, commanding where people should be.” McCormack’s confidence and poise on the field were evident, as he completed 6 of 17 passes and ran for a 12-yard touchdown later in the game.
Highland’s offense was a collaborative effort, with sophomore running back Landen Garrison rushing for 81 yards and adding a touchdown. The Trojans’ victory is a testament to their resilience, as they notched their first win since facing Whiting in Week 2 of last season.
Geffert noted the maturity of his young team, saying, “The kids have earned it… They kept fighting and moving forward regardless of what was in front of them.” This reflects a strong foundation for the future of Highland football, with sophomores playing a crucial role in the victory.
On the opposing side, Whiting, under first-year coach Thomas Knight, put up a strong fight. Senior running back Demetrio Lopez rushed for 80 yards and scored a touchdown, while sophomore quarterback Julian Madrueno threw for 136 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown to senior wide receiver Berner Garcia.
As Highland prepares for their next matchup against Hanover Central on September 5, the Trojans are looking to build on this momentum. McCormack’s performance has not only earned him the starting role but has also boosted the team’s morale as they navigate the season ahead.
Highland fans and players alike are excited about the potential of this young team. As the Trojans continue to develop, the spotlight will be on McCormack and his ability to lead his team through the challenges that lie ahead.
