Heavy rains east of Southern California have triggered devastating mudslides, resulting in the tragic drowning of a 2-year-old boy in Barstow. The downpour, which began on October 12, 2023, caused chaos on the roads, trapping drivers and leading to multiple rescues.
Officials confirmed that the severe weather was linked to remnants of Tropical Storm Mario, unleashing intense rainfall for over an hour. In Forest Falls, a staggering 1.5 inches (3.8 centimeters) of rain fell in just 60 minutes, far exceeding the region’s typical precipitation levels.
In a heartbreaking incident, Brandon Padilla Aguilera, a 26-year-old father, was swept away with his son, Xavier Padilla Aguilera, while traveling during the storm. While emergency responders successfully rescued Brandon, Xavier tragically drowned after being separated from his father. Authorities recovered the boy’s body on October 13, 2023.
In total, 10 people were rescued from state Route 38 near Jenks Lake, as the area faced treacherous mudslides and flooding. Fortunately, officials reported that all were safe, with no injuries or missing persons in that incident.
The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District had warned residents of potential mud and debris flows, issuing evacuation notices for communities including Forest Falls, Angelus Oaks, and Seven Oaks. A public information officer stated, “An evacuation warning is in effect…due to the potential for mud and debris flows from the approaching storm.”
San Bernardino County has experienced mudslides before, notably in 2021 and 2019, when the region was still recovering from previous wildfires. The current situation poses renewed risks as forecasters predict additional storms over the weekend.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepared as emergency services continue to monitor the situation. As recovery efforts unfold, officials are assessing the extent of damages to homes in affected areas. While the full impact remains unknown, the community faces ongoing threats from unstable ground conditions.
This severe weather event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by heavy rainfall in a region often unaccustomed to such deluges. Communities are urged to stay informed and follow guidance from local authorities as conditions evolve.
