UPDATE: Widespread flooding in Sacramento County has prompted urgent road closures following heavy rainfall on Sunday, October 15, 2023. The intense downpour caused severe damage, including the washing away of a wooden bridge at a resident’s home in Fair Oaks.

Fair Oaks resident Michael Sylvestre described the overwhelming rainfall that lifted his wooden bridge and sent it drifting into a nearby pond. “There was a lot of rain in a very short amount of time,” he stated. Video captured by his wife shows him standing in nearly waist-deep water as conditions worsened. “I knew that I couldn’t go very much further,” he added, illustrating the alarming situation many residents are facing.

The flooding has extended throughout Sacramento County, affecting major roadways and creating hazardous driving conditions. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution, as large areas of standing water have led to significant traffic slowdowns. With stopping distances increased in the deluge, officials recommend leaving extra space between vehicles.

“We prepare for rainstorms like this by monitoring low-lying areas,” said Matt Robinson from the Sacramento County Department of Water Resources. The department has reported over 60 service calls related to clogged drains and flooded streets since the storm began.

Residents are advised to report flooding issues by calling the 311 hotline instead of attempting to clear drains themselves. The heavy rains and resulting flooding are expected to continue impacting the region, making it critical for residents to stay informed and safe.
