The fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis has sparked renewed calls for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with prominent figures like actress and comedian Hannah Einbinder leading the charge. Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen and mother of a six-year-old, was killed during an incident involving ICE officers conducting operations in the area. Einbinder emphasized that “none of us are safe” until the agency is dismantled.

In a statement shared on Instagram, Einbinder expressed her outrage over the shooting and drew parallels between the actions of ICE and systemic injustices faced by marginalized communities. She remarked, “The imperial boomerang has come back home,” referencing how the training provided to ICE by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) impacts communities in the United States. “We cannot go on business as usual—that is a collective death sentence,” she urged, calling for artists and public figures to use their platforms to advocate against ICE.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that the incident is under investigation. According to the Star Tribune, ICE officers were conducting targeted operations when a group of protesters allegedly attempted to obstruct their actions. Tricia McLaughlin, spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), stated that one of the protesters allegedly attempted to run over ICE officers with her vehicle, prompting an officer to fire defensive shots.

In response to the incident, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem characterized the actions of the officers as necessary given the circumstances they faced. “They were attempting to push out their vehicle and a woman attacked them,” she said during a press conference. However, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey criticized this narrative, asserting, “This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying.” He urged ICE to withdraw from the city, stating, “Get the f*ck out of Minneapolis.”

The rising tensions in Minneapolis have prompted protests, with demonstrators gathering at the site of the incident. Many are echoing Einbinder’s sentiments, calling for an end to ICE’s operations, which they argue disproportionately target vulnerable communities.

As the investigation continues, local leaders are urging peace while navigating the complex emotions surrounding this tragic event. The situation highlights the ongoing debate regarding the role of immigration enforcement in American society and the broader implications for civil rights.
