Hancock Health has introduced a groundbreaking robot named “Otto” at its main hospital in Greenfield, Indiana, marking a significant advancement in healthcare technology. This first-of-its-kind robot is designed to enhance efficiency by autonomously transporting medical specimens between departments, thereby reducing the physical strain on hospital staff.

The collaboration between Hancock Health and technology companies Arrive AI and Ottonomy Inc. has brought this innovative solution to fruition. Rob Johnston, a field applications engineer and chief pilot at Arrive AI, explained that the robot operates through an asynchronous delivery system. This means that the process does not require human intervention during specimen drop-offs or pickups, streamlining operations within the hospital.

How Otto Operates

Otto utilizes advanced mapping technology to navigate through the hospital’s corridors, ensuring timely and accurate deliveries. Staff members access designated “arrive points” using their identification badges, allowing Otto to securely drop off items in specialized containers. Johnston noted that the use of this robot saves approximately 0.4 kilometers of walking distance for hospital staff, significantly reducing the time and effort required for these tasks.

The positive impact of Otto is already evident in the daily operations of the Cancer Center. Megan Mellene, a clinical medical assistant at Hancock Health, shared her experience with the robot, stating that it has effectively cut down the time spent on specimen deliveries from around six to seven minutes to just one minute. This efficiency allows her team to dedicate more time to patient care, which is the core of their responsibilities.

Future Prospects and Broader Implications

Hancock Health’s leadership views the introduction of Otto as just the beginning of their journey into automation. Matt Browning, the chief administrative officer, expressed enthusiasm for expanding this technology to other departments, such as food delivery, and potentially extending its use to off-site facilities. Since its rollout in April 2023, Otto has been able to save staff at Hancock Health up to 15 minutes each day on trips to the lab.
