As of Friday, the national average for gas is $2.84, with North Carolina’s average at $2.68. In stark contrast, Halifax County’s average stands at $2.86, surpassing neighboring counties’ prices.
Residents are reacting to the disparity as cheaper options are available in surrounding areas. For instance, Edgecombe County boasts prices as low as $2.62, while Nash County and Warren County report averages of $2.73 and $2.74, respectively. Even across the state line, prices in Greensville County average $2.80.
According to AAA, the national average has dropped from $2.89 last week and $3.07 a month ago, highlighting the persistent issue in Halifax County. Some locals have expressed their irritation with the higher costs, as many rely on fuel for daily commutes and necessities.
Official sources reveal that gas stations in nearby towns like Tarboro are offering prices around $2.36, and Rocky Mount stations are priced between $2.58 and $2.59. This stark contrast raises questions about local pricing strategies.
President of New Dixie Oil Corp., Scott Aman, acknowledges the public’s concerns and explains that several factors contribute to local fuel pricing. “We sell top-tier branded fuels with the best additives,” Aman stated. He detailed that supplier costs, taxes, delivery, and competition all play a role in pricing. “Cost is a constant roller coaster,” he added, emphasizing the challenges of remaining competitive.
With new competition entering the market, Aman notes that prices can fluctuate significantly. “New competition usually impacts a market, temporarily driving prices down for several weeks,” he explained. However, this trend tends to level off over time.
Local developments may soon affect fuel prices as well. The City of Roanoke Rapids has announced that a new 7-ELEVEN will replace the old Carolina BBQ and Chicken restaurant on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway, a popular stop for travelers on Interstate 95. Sheetz also operates in the area and aims to keep fuel prices competitive.
“Fuel pricing can vary by region due to a number of factors,” said Nick Ruffner, Public Affairs Manager for Sheetz. He stated that while they do not disclose specific pricing strategies, the company remains committed to delivering value to customers.
Aman summarized the complexity of the fuel business, stating, “Every market may be different, and that frustrates me.” He understands the confusion and frustration felt by consumers, especially as they compare prices across various counties.
