A gunman opened fire in a prominent office building in Midtown Manhattan on the evening of July 28, 2025, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and leaving a fifth critically injured. The shooter, identified as Shane Tamura, 27, from Las Vegas, ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to New York City officials.
The incident occurred at a location that houses major firms, including the NFL, KPMG, and Blackstone. During a briefing, New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that a police officer, identified as Didarul Islam, was among those killed. Officer Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant, represented the best of the NYPD, as noted by officials.
The NYPD reported that Tamura was armed with an M4 rifle. Surveillance footage revealed he first shot a woman who had sought cover behind a pillar in the lobby. He then continued to fire indiscriminately, targeting a security guard behind a desk and shooting another man before fleeing to an elevator bank. The suspect died on the 33rd floor of the building, which is the headquarters for Rudin, the building’s owners, after fatally shooting another victim.
According to NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the motives behind Tamura’s actions remain under investigation. She also disclosed that he had a documented mental health history. In addition to the rifle, officers discovered a revolver and ammunition in a vehicle that was double-parked outside the building.
The situation has drawn significant attention, with FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirming that agents are on-site to assist local law enforcement. Attorney General Pam Bondi indicated that the U.S. attorney in New York, Jay Clayton, had established a command post to coordinate the response to the shooting.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed that a league employee was among the injured, stating in a message to staff that the individual is currently hospitalized but in stable condition. This tragic event has raised concerns about workplace safety and mental health awareness, further complicating an already tense climate in the nation regarding gun violence.
As the investigation continues, the city mourns the loss of those affected by this senseless act of violence, with community leaders calling for a renewed focus on addressing the factors contributing to such incidents. The incident stands as a stark reminder of the need for ongoing discussions about public safety and mental health resources.
