URGENT UPDATE: A Griffith man has been charged with sexual battery after a shocking incident at the town’s popular Rock n’ Rail festival. Michael R. “Mad Mac” McInerney, aged 63, faces two counts of sexual battery, classified as a Level 6 felony, following allegations of groping a woman during a bicycle drive-by.

The incident occurred on August 28 around 10:55 p.m. in the 200 block of Broad Street. According to court documents, the victim approached police officers immediately after the attack, describing how McInerney sexually assaulted her as he rode past.

Witnesses report that the woman was walking between two food trucks when McInerney passed by on his bicycle. As she paused to let him go by, he allegedly reached out and grabbed her left breast before pedaling away. In a moment of courage, the woman chased after him, throwing her ice cream cone in an attempt to confront him about the assault. However, during this exchange, McInerney allegedly groped her a second time.

The victim recorded shocking footage of McInerney as he rode away, flipping her off while she accused him of the unwanted touching. Detectives quickly reviewed video footage from Griffith Police cameras, confirming the suspect’s identity based on the woman’s description. Detectives noted that McInerney slowed his bike down at the scene before escaping, and a detective recognized him from previous police encounters.

Authorities confirm that McInerney, known to some as “Mad Mac,” has a history of prior police contacts. He has occasionally served as a fill-in host on WJOB radio 1230 AM, adding to the community’s shock over this incident.

McInerney’s initial court hearing is scheduled for December 19, where he will face the charges. The community is urged to remain vigilant, as this troubling incident raises serious questions about safety during local events.

As this case develops, residents are encouraged to report any further information that may assist the investigation. The public’s response and support for the victim are vital in ensuring justice is served.
