Gregory Allen Hoellwarth, aged 67, passed away at his home on May 24, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. His family and friends fondly remember him for his quick wit, positive spirit, and diverse interests, which included model railroading, frisbee golf, wine-tasting, and raising puppies.

Born on July 5, 1957, in Solano County, California, Greg was the son of Beverly and Robert Hoellwarth MD. He grew up in Vallejo and attended California State University, Sacramento, where he studied Electrical Engineering for two years before embarking on a career in computer programming. He worked at the Mark Larwood Company in Sacramento and later at Quantum in Napa, continuing until 2020.

A Passion for Nature and Community Service

Greg shared a lifelong passion for birding with his father, compiling an impressive list of bird species throughout his life. His enthusiasm extended to road cycling, where he actively participated in cycling clubs, volunteered for road races, and spent early mornings in July glued to the Tour de France on television, donning his cycling gear.

In addition to cycling, Greg enjoyed frisbee golf and, in his later years, took up bocce. His dedication to model railroading went beyond mere hobbyism; he was deeply involved in clubs and could recall intricate details about locomotives and historic trains. Greg and his wife, Gayle, often included iconic rail journeys in their extensive world travels.

One of Greg’s proudest achievements was his commitment to raising puppies for Canine Companions. Over 25 years, he and Gayle facilitated the entry of more than 300 dogs into the organization’s service training program. This endeavor showcased Greg’s compassion and dedication to helping others.

A Life of Meaningful Connections

Greg was also a committed member of the Napa Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, serving on its board twice. Although he identified as an atheist, he enjoyed engaging discussions surrounding spirituality and the meaning of existence. His approach to life was characterized by curiosity and a desire for understanding.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle Keane; his three siblings: Tina Korabiak, Carla Little, and Chris Hoellwarth; numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws; and his beloved Labrador Retrievers, Zambra and Etta.

In lieu of flowers, Greg requested that contributions be made to any professional organization that promotes and supports the free practice of truth in journalism. His legacy of kindness, curiosity, and community service leaves a lasting impact on those who knew him.
