UPDATE: Greenville High School students were treated to a heartwarming holiday dinner on December 9, featuring traditional favorites like glazed maple carrots, roasted ham, and mashed potatoes. This annual event, organized by the school district’s food and nutrition department, ensures that every student, regardless of their socio-economic background, can enjoy a festive meal during the holiday season.
With approximately 1,100 students participating, the school’s Food and Nutrition Director, Dan Kuk, emphasized the importance of inclusivity at this event. “Not all students have access to such meals at home,” Kuk stated. “This dinner allows everyone to experience the joy of a holiday feast.”
The initiative is particularly significant for students from lower-income families and international exchange students unfamiliar with American holiday traditions. The meal is provided at no cost, underlining the school district’s commitment to supporting its students. Kuk expressed his gratitude, saying, “It’s a little bit of an added expense, but the school district helps out with that.”
In a collaborative effort, DECA students joined in to enhance the festive atmosphere. Senior Emily Fox, DECA vice president of public relations, shared, “We’ve had a lot of volunteers making everything clean and festive. It’s important for us to show what DECA is about.”
The holiday dinner also featured special desserts, including homemade apple crumble and cherry turnovers, served by DECA members. “Doing this means a lot because we are able to provide for everybody,” Fox added.
The event took on a magical twist as Claude Johnson, a Greenville City Councilman, donned a Santa hat and was accompanied by The Grinch, spreading holiday cheer throughout the cafeteria. Sophomores Gabby Pelak and Kendal Taylor remarked on the uplifting atmosphere. “It’s really nice and makes me feel festive,” Taylor said, while Pelak praised the meal, stating, “It was really good. It was also nice to have something to look forward to at lunch.”
As students enjoyed their meals, the cafeteria buzzed with excitement, enhanced by Christmas music and decorations. Kuk acknowledged the hard work of his staff, expressing appreciation for their dedication to providing such a memorable experience. “I am blessed to have them,” he declared.
The holiday dinner not only fulfills nutritional needs but also fosters community spirit, making it a cherished tradition at Greenville High School. The success of this year’s event reinforces the importance of inclusivity and celebration during the holiday season. As students reflect on this joyful occasion, many are already looking forward to next year’s celebration.
