UPDATE: Grand Rapids Christian’s girls volleyball team has just secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 6 Tecumseh in the Division 2 state quarterfinals held at Gull Lake High School on October 24, 2023. The Eagles clinched the match with a decisive 15-9 win in the fifth set, showcasing their resilience and battle-tested spirit.
This victory is critical as it propels Grand Rapids Christian (27-8) into the state semifinals against second-ranked and defending champion Detroit Country Day (22-8) on Friday at noon at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. The match underscores the Eagles’ preparation and determination as they seek to return to the finals for the second time in three years.
The match unfolded dramatically, with the Eagles initially taking the first set 25-16. However, Tecumseh rallied to win the second set 25-20, only for Grand Rapids to regain momentum with another 25-20 win in the third, driven by senior Maddie Landheer’s four kills. The fourth set saw Tecumseh surge back, clinching a 25-23 victory to force a fifth and final set.
Eagles coach Amy Huisken emphasized her team’s preparation for high-pressure situations. “The fifth set is something that we practice a lot,” Huisken stated. “We’ve seen it a lot in our season, so we’re pretty battle-tested.” Her strategy paid off as the Eagles quickly established a lead in the decisive set, thanks to all-state junior outside hitter Grace Goodyke and sophomore middle hitter Mya McKinnon.
Tecumseh, last year’s Division 2 state runner-up, concluded their season with a strong record of 55-3. Coach Morgan Skelton acknowledged the pressure her team faced, noting how “nerves might have played a role” in their performance during the pivotal moments of the match. Senior Emma Eldred led Tecumseh with 17 kills, while freshman Riley Harrah contributed 10 kills in an impressive showing for a rookie on such a significant stage.
As the Eagles look ahead to the semifinal match against Detroit Country Day, they are fueled by a blend of experience and eagerness to prove themselves. “They want to be back there, and they’re able to explain that and show the people who haven’t been there how exciting it is,” Huisken noted, highlighting the passion of her returning players.
This victory not only marks a significant achievement for Grand Rapids Christian but also sets the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating semifinal match. Fans and supporters are eagerly anticipating the Eagles’ next challenge as they aim for a shot at the state title. Stay tuned for live updates and coverage of the upcoming match!
