Google has announced a significant expansion of its AI-powered video editor, Vids, making it available to all users. Previously limited to subscribers of Google Workspace or the AI plan, the tool now offers a basic version that can be accessed broadly. According to Vishnu Sivaji, product director at Google, the app includes templates, stock media, and a selection of AI capabilities designed to streamline video editing and creation.

Launched in March 2023, Vids aims to assist users in quickly assembling video presentations. This tool provides a comprehensive suite of AI editing features, such as a storyboard creator that suggests scenes, stock images, and background music. Users can select from 12 AI avatars to deliver messages, enhancing the personalization of their video content.

Although the newly available free version retains many of the core functionalities of the full app, it does not include some of the advanced AI features introduced in this update. Notably absent is the option to generate a custom AI avatar, which competitors like Zoom currently offer. When questioned about future developments regarding this feature, Sivaji stated that Google has no updates to share at this time.

Google is also enhancing Vids’ existing capabilities by allowing users to create concise 8-second clips that highlight specific images, such as new products. Additionally, if users wish to incorporate a personal video into their presentation, they can utilize a new AI-powered tool that automatically trims filler words and pauses from their recordings.

The introduction of these features is part of Google’s broader strategy to help businesses save time and costs in video production. Sivaji noted that traditional video projects, such as a ten-minute clip featuring real actors, can take up to six months and cost tens of thousands of dollars. He explained, “What we’re hearing from customers is that it allows them to dramatically scale how many people can make these kinds of videos and how often they can make them.”

As more users gain access to Vids, the potential for businesses to enhance their video content creation processes appears promising. By integrating AI technology into video editing, Google aims to empower users with tools that not only simplify the production process but also increase efficiency in delivering engaging content.
