Google has confirmed that older Pixel smartphones, specifically the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro, cannot utilize the ultra-wideband (UWB) tracking feature available on newer models. This limitation affects users seeking to locate UWB-compatible trackers, which are already scarce in the Android ecosystem.

The Pixel 6 Pro, which debuted in 2021, was the first model to support UWB technology. Yet, Google has clarified that precise UWB tracking is exclusively supported on the Pixel 8 and newer models. This restriction has raised questions among users regarding the potential of the hardware in older devices, as both the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro possess the necessary capabilities to support UWB.

Despite inquiries from The Verge, Google has not provided an explanation for the absence of UWB precise tracking in these earlier models. The information has been corroborated by a support page on Google’s website, which emphasizes that UWB precise finding is limited to select Android devices. These include the Plus and Ultra versions of the Samsung Galaxy S21 and newer models, along with certain Motorola Edge and Razr devices.

Limited Availability of UWB Trackers

The ecosystem for UWB-compatible trackers is minimal, and those that do exist are not widely available. Earlier this year, Google’s Find Hub network began to offer support for UWB precise tracking, but options for compatible trackers remain limited.

Samsung’s SmartTag Plus was a notable UWB tracker, but it has since been discontinued. Currently, the only available tracker supporting UWB precision finding is the Moto Tag, which retails for $29 and was launched in June 2024. This tracker added UWB support through a firmware update earlier this year.

As the demand for precise location tracking increases, the limitations faced by users of older Pixel models may hinder their ability to fully utilize available technology. Google’s choice to restrict this feature raises questions about the future of UWB support across its smartphone lineup and how it may affect user experience moving forward.

With only a few options available in the market, users may need to consider upgrading to newer devices to take full advantage of UWB tracking capabilities.
