UPDATE: As the New York Giants gear up for their season opener against the Washington Commanders on September 10, 2023, head coach Brian Daboll is maintaining an air of secrecy surrounding the team’s quarterback situation. With kickoff just days away, speculation mounts over whether Jaxson Dart or Jameis Winston will serve as the No. 2 quarterback.
During a closed practice session on Monday, Daboll evaded questions regarding the outcome of critical position battles, particularly at the right guard and cornerback slots. While it seems Greg Van Roten has secured his spot over Evan Neal, the decision on the backup quarterback remains shrouded in mystery.
Daboll’s strategy comes amid a unique set of circumstances, with rookie Dart showing promise throughout training camp but Winston listed ahead of him on the unofficial depth chart. “We have a good idea of how we’re going to play,” Daboll stated, adding that details will be revealed on Sunday.
Traditionally, the No. 2 quarterback leads the scout-team offense, leaving third-stringer Tommy DeVito sidelined during regular-season practices. This approach has previously put DeVito at a disadvantage when called into action. However, it appears that Daboll is open to adapting his strategy this season, considering the dual development paths of both Dart and Winston.
“We’ll decide what we want to do on some of the (practice) periods,” Daboll confirmed. “The backup quarterbacks will get a lot of reps on the (scout) teams as the week goes on.”
In accordance with NFL regulations, only two quarterbacks from a three-man roster can be active for game day, with the third available only in case of emergency. This adds further urgency for the Giants as they finalize their game plan ahead of Sunday’s kickoff.
Fans and analysts alike are on edge, eagerly awaiting clarity on the team’s quarterback lineup. Stay tuned for updates as the Giants prepare for a pivotal season opener under the Friday night lights.
