Gene Fay Summers, affectionately known as “Woodpecker,” passed away on September 13, 2025, at the age of 77 following a prolonged health struggle. His family announced the news following his hospitalization, marking the end of a life rich in love, dedication, and hard work.

Born on February 27, 1948, in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, Gene became a long-time resident of Hampton, Virginia, where he spent over 60 years in the Buckroe area. He dedicated more than 40 years to his career as a Welding Foreman at Newport News Shipbuilding, retiring in 2009. His professional life was characterized by commitment and expertise, contributing significantly to the maritime industry.

Gene’s personal life was equally vibrant. He was deeply cherished as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His family described him as a loving figure who took joy in spending time with loved ones. He was known for his unique habits, such as ensuring his squirrels were fed daily and frequently checking his lottery tickets—a testament to his engaging personality.

The loss of Gene is felt profoundly by his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Bessie D. Summers, his older brother, Francis Ronald Summers, and his identical twin, Dean Ray Summers, with whom he shared an extraordinary bond. His immediate survivors include his devoted wife, Rita Summers, and their three sons: Ryan Summers (Marisa), William Summers, and Matthew Summers (Catherine). Gene is also remembered by his sister, Linda Seely (David), his sister-in-law, Terri Summers, and his grandchildren: Laila, Thomas, Maddox, and Lucas.

Celebration of Life and Legacy

Family and friends will gather to honor Gene’s memory at the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on Friday, September 19, 2025. The visitation will take place from 11:00 to 12:00, followed by a celebration of his life starting at noon. Interment will occur afterward at Parklawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions to the Animal Aid Society or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, nonprofits that reflect Gene’s compassionate spirit and commitment to helping others.
