URGENT UPDATE: The Galena Police Department has officially reintroduced its K-9 unit, partnering Officer Riese Federman with a new canine companion named Storm. This exciting development comes after a significant $20,000 donation from a generous Wisconsin resident, aimed at bolstering public safety in the community.

Since his arrival, Storm, a 1.5-year-old Belgian Malinois and German shepherd mix, has quickly become an integral part of the police force. Officer Federman expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “It’s just rewarding to see him grow,” highlighting the unique bond they are developing. The duo completed an initial five-week training program at Jessiffany Canine Services in Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, ensuring Storm is well-prepared for various police duties.

The K-9 unit’s revival is particularly significant following the retirement of former K-9 officer Hektor in May 2023, who served the department successfully under former Officer Devin Halstead. According to Galena Police Sgt. Keith Brandel, Hektor was invaluable for narcotics searches and served as a deterrent in escalating situations. “The presence of a K-9 often prevents situations from escalating,” Brandel stated, emphasizing the importance of the K-9 unit in law enforcement.

Officer Federman is currently the only Galena officer to work with a K-9 partner in the past two years. She is committed to constantly training with Storm, who is dual-purpose trained for narcotics, tracking, apprehension, and bite work. The team is required to complete 16 training hours a month, ensuring they remain effective in the field.

Since May, Storm has already been deployed approximately seven times for traffic stops and four to five times for building searches and perimeter checks. Federman works primarily on Monday, Tuesday, and weekends but remains on call 24/7, ready to respond whenever needed. “He’s ready to go downstairs all the time,” she remarked, describing the eagerness of her young partner.

The reestablishment of the K-9 unit not only enhances the Galena Police Department’s capabilities but also serves as a vital resource for other law enforcement agencies in the area. Brandel confirmed that having a working K-9 is essential for collaboration in regional law enforcement efforts.

Federman’s journey into the K-9 unit has been a challenging yet rewarding experience. “It was very eye-opening, as well as a lot of hard work,” she said, reflecting on the training process. “It’s the most rewarding job I’ve ever done.” With the community’s support and the renewed K-9 unit, the Galena Police Department is set to improve safety and strengthen its bond with the public.

As this story develops, residents are encouraged to stay informed about the positive impact Storm and Officer Federman will have on the Galena community.
