UPDATE: In a stunning recognition of his exceptional athletic talent, Gabe Funk has been named the 2025 South Central Iowa Athlete of the Year by three regional newspapers, including the Creston News Advertiser. This prestigious honor comes as the Lenox High School senior wraps up a remarkable high school sports career, establishing a legacy that is hard to match.

Funk has excelled across four sports—football, basketball, track and field, and baseball—making him a standout in the tightly-knit Lenox community. “It’s small-town pride,” Funk said. “You do it for your friends. You do one sport to help them out, and they’ll do one for you.”

The recognition highlights Funk’s incredible achievements, including multiple individual state championships and a scholarship opportunity at the University of Northern Iowa for track and field. “When Spencer was back in April, we talked in the hallway. He said to enjoy it. It was a lot of fun for him,” Funk recounted, referring to NFL player Spencer Brown.

Funk’s athletic prowess shines brightest on the track, where he holds numerous records, including a school record of 14.20 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and a remarkable 52.40 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles. His five-time state champion status solidifies his place among the best athletes in the region. “Gabe’s best days in track are still ahead of him,” said Michael Nardini, Lenox’s boys track and field coach.

In baseball, Funk wrapped up his senior season with a staggering .427 batting average, leading the state with 56 stolen bases. His performance not only contributed to the team’s success but also showcased his dynamic skill set as a player. “He covers so much ground out there,” said baseball coach Trevor Luther.

Funk’s achievements extend beyond athletics; he also excelled academically, graduating as valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA. “I was very blessed to come through when I did,” Funk stated, reflecting on the supportive environment cultivated by his coaches and teammates.

As Funk prepares for his collegiate career focused on the 400-meter event and possibly the decathlon, he leaves behind a legacy that exemplifies dedication and excellence in sports. “It’s on you, and I kind of like that,” he shared, expressing his excitement for the challenges ahead.

The community of Lenox is rallying behind Funk as he embarks on this new chapter, proud of a young athlete who has not only set records but has also inspired his peers. The announcement of his award is both a celebration of his achievements and a testament to the vibrant athletic culture at Lenox High School.

As we await Funk’s next steps at UNI, all eyes will be on the talented athlete who is destined to make waves in collegiate athletics. Stay tuned for more updates on Funk’s journey and his impact on the sports community.
