Fulcrum Health, a medical benefits organization based in Plymouth, is set to launch a mobile clinic aimed at addressing opioid dependency through non-pharmacological treatments. The initiative, which will begin in October 2023, is supported by a grant of $318,000 from the Minnesota Department of Human Services. This new service will provide underserved communities in Anoka, Hennepin, and Ramsey counties with access to alternative therapies, including acupuncture, massage, and physical therapy, with the goal of reducing reliance on opioids.

The mobile clinic seeks to raise awareness about treatment alternatives specifically for chronic musculoskeletal pain. According to Patricia Dennis, CEO of Fulcrum Health, this initiative is particularly important given the impending changes to Medicaid benefits in Minnesota. Starting on January 1, 2026, the state is set to eliminate chiropractic benefits for Medicaid members over the age of 21, a change that will impact over 1 million residents.

“Physical medicine treats the root cause of pain, not just the symptoms,” Dennis stated. “While pain medication is sometimes necessary, it can also mask the pain.” The mobile clinic aims to utilize hands-on techniques, movement therapy, and personalized care to facilitate healing.

Appointments for the mobile clinic can be scheduled online, where patients can also view their insurance and benefits. If ongoing care is required, the clinic’s providers will assist in establishing connections with network providers in the area. “The care doesn’t end when the mobile clinic rolls away,” Dennis emphasized. “Patients will have a clear path to continue their treatment and to stay on track.”

This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to mitigate the opioid crisis and promote holistic health solutions. By providing these essential services, Fulcrum Health aims to foster healthier communities while addressing the pressing issue of opioid dependency. The launch of the mobile clinic marks a significant step towards expanding access to diverse treatment options for individuals in need.
