UPDATE: Montgomery County is taking urgent measures to combat drunk driving this holiday season. Starting immediately, the Dayton Police Department has announced that residents can secure a free Uber ride home through the ArriveSafe program until 6 a.m. on December 6, 2023.

In a compelling social media post, authorities revealed that this initiative aims to ensure safety on the roads during the festive period. Last Thanksgiving, the ArriveSafe program successfully provided over 3,000 rides, significantly reducing the risk of OVI (Operating a Vehicle Impaired) crashes.

Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck emphasized the importance of this program, stating, “What I’m hoping to get for Christmas this year is everyone home safe.” This statement underscores the critical need for community involvement in keeping the roads safe during the holidays.

Dayton Police Sgt. Gordon Cairns highlighted a concerning trend, noting an increase in marijuana-related driving violations. “It’s frustrating, people still go out and drink and drive. They smoke marijuana now and drive. We’ve seen an increase in marijuana violations,” he said. These alarming statistics make the ArriveSafe initiative even more vital this season.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to prevent potential tragedies. The program reflects a strong community commitment to safety and responsible behavior during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

To access the free ride service, users can scan the QR code provided by the Dayton Police Department on their social media platforms.

As the holiday approaches, this initiative not only aims to reduce incidents of drunk driving but also fosters a culture of care within the community. Authorities are urging everyone to prioritize safety and ensure that they have a plan for getting home safely after celebrations.
