Epic Games has announced the introduction of sidekick pets in its popular game, Fortnite. Set to launch alongside a special mini-season themed around *The Simpsons*, these sidekicks will enhance gameplay by providing players with virtual companions during various modes. The first sidekick, named Peels, resembles a dog-shaped banana and is inspired by the in-game character Peely. Peels will be available as part of the battle pass starting on November 1, 2023.
The sidekick feature allows players to earn “sidekick points” by having their pets accompany them in matches. These points can be used to unlock cosmetics for the sidekicks, expanding the customization options available to players. According to the official announcement from Epic Games, players will have the ability to name their sidekicks and customize their appearances. Notably, these changes are permanent, meaning players can purchase multiple versions of the same sidekick with different looks.
New Features and Revenue Opportunities
This new feature is anticipated to generate substantial revenue for Epic Games, as it opens the door for a wider range of in-game purchases. Players can expect to see more items in the shop related to sidekick customization, which aligns with the company’s strategy of enhancing user engagement and monetization. The addition of sidekick pets not only enriches the gaming experience but also allows Epic Games to tap into the lucrative market of virtual pet ownership, reminiscent of the Pokémon franchise.
The sidekicks exhibit behaviors that closely resemble emotes, with early footage showing them performing actions that mirror player movements. For instance, a dinosaur sidekick interacts with an egg while the player kicks a ball. This feature aims to enhance the social aspect of the game, as sidekicks can be seen by other players, potentially affecting gameplay dynamics. While sidekicks do not provide any gameplay advantages and cannot take damage, their visibility means they could inadvertently reveal a player’s location.
Following the release of Peels, players can look forward to the arrival of additional sidekicks, including Bonesy, Spike, and Lil’ Raptor, scheduled for November 7, 2023. Players who own the Bonesy Back Bling will automatically receive the Bonesy pet, further incentivizing purchases and engagement with existing content. Epic Games has hinted at future additions that may include feline-themed options, indicating a commitment to expanding this new gameplay element.
As Fortnite continues to evolve, the introduction of sidekick pets represents another innovative step by Epic Games to keep players engaged and generate new revenue streams. The combination of unique designs, customization options, and interactive gameplay promises to enhance the overall experience for millions of players worldwide.
